End of Hiatus (brain block)

by John Rasmussen on May 24, 2009

I have received a commission to add a ruby to the center of a horseshoe of 10 karat gold set with accent diamonds.  First will be the repair of the horseshoe.  It has been bent out of shape, the owner does barrel racing in rodeo competitions.  For those not familiar, barrel racing is done on a horse around barrels set in an arena for time.  Serpentine course around barrels down and back to start place.  The ring is being worn on the hand that holds the horse’s reins, so can not be weak or it will break.

Recently, I got to see an engagement ring that I made for two friends from a stone that they gave me as a rough.  That is the ring was on her finger.  They mined the topaz in Hiddenite NC; took the rough, cut stone and set it in sterling silver (they did not want traditional diamone/gold combination).  The topaz was cut in an oval shape and not treated so it remained as a beautiful clear stone.

Last evening, a friend brought to work several stones (and two very old loupes) that his great grandfather had.  The great grandfather had been a jeweler.  He had several very well cut stones and pearls.  He is quite interested in pursuing having some jewelry made for his wife with these stones.

I am feeling almost useful again.  Designing some new items to manufacture in the shop.  BRAIN BLOCK is over!
